Ganga got lucky when a scout from Georgetown recognized him and recruited him for the under-16 world tournament

Having had a steady, but unspectacular tour of Australia in 2000/01, he didn't manage to really make his mark until a set of back-to-back centuries against Australia.

In July 2005, he was voted Trinidad and Tobago's Cricketer of the Year following a successful Carib Beer competition, during which, in a match against the Leeward Islands, he scored 265 runs in a single innings. In April 2006 he was one of six players shortlisted for the captaincy of the West Indies cricket team. The other candidates were Denesh Ramdin, Chris Gayle, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Sylvester Joseph, and Brian Lara. In April 2006, the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) chose veteran batsman Brian Lara as captain. Despite being a player who is in and out of the side, Ganga impressed in the recent Test series against India, scoring a career best 135 in the third Test in St Kitts and Nevis.

Appointment as West Indies Vice Captain

Ganga was not selected for the World Cup which was held in the Caribbean in March/April 2007. He was however selected to tour England with the West Indies in May 2007. In the first series in the post Lara era of West Indian cricker, Ganga was appointed West Indies vice captain.

The West Indies cricket board's confidence in Ganga was most likely due to his leadership of the Trinidad and Tobgao team in 2006 and 2007.

Appointment as West Indies Captain

Following an injury to Captain Ramnaresh Sarwan that ruled him out of the 2007 tour of England, Ganga was appointed by the West Indies Board as Captain of the West Indies team for the remainder of the tour. Cricket analyst see this as an opportunity for Ganga to bring his leadership skills to bear on a deflated West Indian outfit.

Jamaica Gleaner - Daren Ganga hits a ton - Monday | August 13, 2001 (302 words)
DAREN Ganga struck a century as West Indies played out a draw against Kenya in a four-day tour match yesterday after a day had been lost to rain.
Ganga and Chris Gayle resumed the West Indies first innings at 117 for no wicket in reply to Kenya's 290 after heavy rains had washed out play on Saturday, making the draw virtually inevitable.
"Ganga and Gayle confirmed their outstanding opening partnership which started in Zimbabwe, which I must say is good for the future of Windies cricket," West Indies manager Ricky Skerritt said.
