In the Redwall universe, Dark Forest is the afterlife for "goodbeasts" (A heaven of sorts). It is rather mysterious, described as a silent forest where the inhabitants (mainly the spirits of good creatures) are completely free. It is mentioned several times in the Redwall series, and Sunflash the Mace even witnesses the gates of Dark Forest in a hallucination. The vermin refer to the place they go after they are dead as "Hellgates". Hellgates is apparently on fire, or presumed to be by the "vermin" who seem to swear by it.
