Daralfonoon (Persian دار الفنون), established 1851 was the first modern institution of higher learning in Iran. Founded by Amir Kabir, then the royal vizier to the shah of Iran, Daralfanoon originally was conceived as a polytechnic to train upper-class Persian youth in medicine, engineering, military science and geology. It was similar in scope and purpose to American land grant colleges like Purdue University and Texas A&M. Like them, it developed and expanded its mission over the next hundred years, eventually becoming the University of Tehran. The Darolfonoon institute in downtown Nasser Khosro Street in Tehran is in bad condition and awaiting funds that would heal wounds inflicted on the monument over time.
He explained that renovation of the electrical wiring, repairing the ceiling and converting the publishing center to a computer site are among the measures planned for this phase which is estimated to take one month.
Darolfonoon served as a seat of learning until 1971, but was later abandoned out of fear of possible destruction of the building.

In his notes he points out that in 1889 the number of students at Darolfonoon was 387 of whom 75 students were engaged in military studies and training, 140 in science and technology, 45 in learning the French language, 37 in English, 10 in Russian and 80 in technical drawing and building techniques.
Darolfonoon expanded rapidly and Nassereddin Shah made serious attempt at developing it; perhaps to make up for his great mistake of killing the Amir.
