Darrouzett is a town located in Lipscomb County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 303. The town is named for John Louis Darrouzett, a Texas state legislator who served as an attorney for the Santa Fe Railroad.


Geography

Darrouzett is located at 36°26'40" North, 100°19'35" West (36.444544, -100.326487)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.0 km˛ (0.4 mi˛). 1.0 km˛ (0.4 mi˛) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 303 people, 137 households, and 84 families residing in the town. The population density is 316.2/km˛ (809.7/mi˛). There are 182 housing units at an average density of 189.9/km˛ (486.3/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 91.75% White, 0.66% African American, 0.66% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 2.64% from other races, and 4.29% from two or more races. 9.24% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 137 households out of which 23.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.7% are married couples living together, 3.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.0% are non-families. 36.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 20.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.21 and the average family size is 2.89.


In the town the population is spread out with 25.4% under the age of 18, 4.0% from 18 to 24, 22.4% from 25 to 44, 25.7% from 45 to 64, and 22.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 100.0 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $32,625, and the median income for a family is $35,000. Males have a median income of $33,000 versus $19,063 for females. The per capita income for the town is $17,237. 11.3% of the population and 9.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 12.0% of those under the age of 18 and 0.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Darrouzett, on State Highway 15 in northern Lipscomb County, began as a station on the Panhandle and Santa Fe Railway in 1917.
Upon completion of the rail line in 1919-20, the town was renamed in honor of Texas legislator John Louis Darrouzett, who served as an attorney for the Santa Fe.
In 1972 Darrouzett's leaders launched the Village Improvement Plan, under which recreational facilities were improved and expanded and cultural events like the annual Deutsches Fest were initiated.
