The Dart River flows through rugged forested country in the southwestern South Island of New Zealand. Partly in Mount Aspiring National Park, it flows southwards for 60 kilometres from its headwaters in the Southern Alps, eventually flowing into the northern end of Lake Wakatipu near Glenorchy. Several popular tramping tracks are found nearby, notably the Rees-Dart Track, which follows the valley of the Dart and the nearby Rees River.

Today the DartRiver Valley's wild mountains, glaciers, waterfalls and unbroken forest make up one of the greatest wilderness areas in the Southern Hemisphere, with its ancient Tawahi (beech) trees being distant cousins of those found in Chile, all retaining many similarities to their ancestors.
