Encyclopedia > Data terminal equipment

DTE is an abbreviation for Data Terminal Equipment, and refers to an end instrument that converts user information into signals for transmission, or reconverts the received signals into user information. A DTE device communicates with the Data Circuit-terminating Equipment (DCE). The DTE/DCE classification was introduced by IBM company. Data is the plural of datum. ... In telecommunication, the term terminal equipment has the following meanings: Communications equipment at either end of a communications link, used to permit the stations involved to accomplish the mission for which the link was established. ... In telecommunications an end instrument is a technical term for the piece of equipment connected to the wires at the end of a telecommunications link. ... User information is information transferred across the functional interface between a source user and a telecommunications system for delivery to a destination user. ... In telecommunications, transmission is the act of transmitting electrical messages (and the associated phenomena of radiant energy that passes through media). ... An electrical network is an interconnection of electrical elements such as resistors, inductors, capacitors, and switches. ... DCE is an abbreviation for Data Circuit-Terminating Equipment and its synonyms are Data Communications Equipment and Data Carrier Equipment. ... now. ...

A DTE is the functional unit of a data station that serves as a data source or a data sink and provides for the data communication control function to be performed in accordance with link protocol. In computer engineering, an execution unit is a part of a CPU that performs the operations and calculations called for by the program. ... Many modern sinks are made of stainless steel In plumbing, a sink is a bowl-shaped fixture, usually made of porcelain (or, especially in the kitchen, stainless steel), that is used for washing hands or small objects such as dishes, nylons, socks or underwear. ... A computer network is a system for communication among two or more computers. ... In communications, the transmission of a unit of data from one node to another (OSI layer 2). ...

The data terminal equipment (DTE) may be a single piece of equipment or an interconnected subsystem of multiple pieces of equipment that perform all the required functions necessary to permit users to communicate. A user interacts with the DTE (e.g. through a Human-Machine Interface), or the DTE may be the user. Human-Machine Interface (HMI) is a term that refers to the layer that separates a human that is operating a machine from the machine itself. ...

Usually, the DTE device is the terminal (or a computer emulating a terminal), and the DCE is a modem. A computer terminal is an electronic or electromechanical hardware device that is used for entering data into, and displaying data from, a computer or a computing system. ... A Lego RCX Computer is an example of an embedded computer used to control mechanical devices. ... A modem (a portmanteau constructed from modulate and demodulate) is a device that modulates an analog carrier signal to encode digital information, and also demodulates such a carrier signal to decode the transmitted information. ...

DTE is usually a male connector and DCE is a female connector.

A general rule is that DCE devices provide the clock (internal clocking) and that the DTE device synchronizes on the provided clock (external clocking). D-sub connectors follow another rule for pin assingnment. DTE devices usually transmit on pin connector number 2 and receive on pin connector number 3. DCE devices are just the opposite: pin connector number 2 is receiving and pin connector number 3 is transmitting the signals. The D-subminiature or D-sub is a common type of electrical connector used particularly in computers (that is, a computer connector). ... RS-232 (also referred to as EIA RS-232C or V.24) is a standard for serial binary data interchange between a DTE (Data terminal equipment) and a DCE (Data communication equipment). ...
