He was born on Jan 31, 1896 at Dharwad in Karnataka. He completed his matriculation in 1913 and joined the Ferguson College, Pune for his higher education. by 1920 he joined Victoria High School in Dharwad as a teacher. He was married to Laxmibai in 1919 at Hubli, by this time his first collection of poems KrishnaKumari was pusblished. Bendre started the cutrual movement of Nada-habba a celebration of land and its culture which is still prevailant in karnataka. This festival is celebrated during the navaratri. In 1935 he earned his M.A. degree. on December 26, 1943 he presided over the prestigious 27th Kannada Literary Conference at Shimoga. From 1944 -1956 he worked at the D.A.V College Solapur as a professor for Kannada and later was appointed by All India Radio as Advisor to Dharwad AIR Station. in 1958 Aralu Maralu, a collection of pomes was awarded the Sahitrya Academy Award. He was feciliated during the 1964 Mysore Dasara Festival and was the year in which Naku Tanti was published which eaned him the Jnanpith Awards. It can be noted that his work in Marathi was also appreciated and his book Samvada was awarded with Kelkar prize in 1965. He was also awarded with the Prestigious Padmashri and D.Litt by Karnataka University Dharwad in the year 1968. The next year he earned the fellowship of the Sahitya Academy. In 1972 the Government of Karnataka producted a documentary on him and Udipi Adimaru conferred him with the Title Kula Thilaka. on April 7, 1974 he Janapith Awards were declared and Bendre has got it for Naku Tanthi it was presented to him at a special function organized at New Delhi on November 8 1974. He passed away on October 26, 1981 at Harkishandas Hospital in Mumbai.
