At his peak, Dave was one of the country's top social engineers (see Social engineering (security)), with the ability to manipulate phone system employees virtually anywhere in the United States. In addition, he had a very high level of hacking skill with regard to Bell and AT&T systems (specifically COSMOS, SCCS, and LMOS), which allowed him virtually unrestricted access to phone lines, including the ability to monitor conversations, throughout the country. He was extremely respected, and even a bit feared, within the hacker community. Many of his original gambits are still in use by social engineers today. One time, Dave was rumored to have brought down the Boston transit system using his infamous "Man who lost his hat" gambit. He served as a mentor to many other notable hackers of the era, including Control C, a well-known Legion of Doom hacker-cum-security consultant from Michigan.


In 1995, Dave served as a technical consultant to the movie Hackers. While the film is panned by some actual hackers as being inaccurate and sensationalized, the anecdotal hacker sequences in the film, as well as the mannerisms and attitudes of the main characters, are patterned after many of the hackers he associated with from the New York City area. Hackers is a 1995 film that follows the misfortunes of the young hackers Dade Murphy (Crash Override/Zero Cool, played by Jonny Lee Miller), Kate Libby (Acid Burn, played by Angelina Jolie) and their friends. ...


Later, in 1997, he co-founded Crossbar Security with Phiber Optik and Andrew Brown. Crossbar provided info security services for a number of large corporations during its short life, during which the principles conducted business in the U.S., Japan, Brazil, and Sweden. He is known for his highly original cover art for 2600 Magazine He has recently completed (in August of 2006) his first feature film, Urchin (film) and is in development with KURU (film) the second movie by The Enemy and Love Simple (film) a film by Mark vonSternbeg.
