Dave Smalley has been a lead singer with the punk rock bands DYS, Dag Nasty, ALL and Down By Law. He has been known for his early contribution to the genre of emo-core music. He also founded a side project called The Sharpshooters, who's music is influenced by such mod bands as The Jam. He received a Bachelor's degree from Boston College and a Masters in Political Science from California State University Los Angeles.

He's recently found himself to be the point of some controversy within the "punk community" for expressing politically conservative views, including an endorsement of the George W. Bush administration.

He resides in Virginia with his family. He works as the Op-ed editor of the Fredricksburg Free Lance-Star newspaper. He previously worked as the youth-editor for it! Magazine at the paper and won several awards for that section.
