Dave Smalley has been a lead singer with the punk rock bands DYS, Dag Nasty, ALL and Down By Law. He has been known for his early contribution to the genre of emo-core music. He also founded a side project called The Sharpshooters, who's music is influenced by such mod bands as The Jam. Punk rock is an anti-establishment music movement beginning around 1976 (although precursors can be found several years earlier), exemplified and popularised by The Ramones, the Sex Pistols, The Clash and The Damned. ... DYS was a straight edge hardcore punk band from Boston, Massachusetts, and part of the notorious Boston Crew along with contemporaries such as SSD and Negative FX. He received a Bachelor's degree from Boston College and a Masters in Political Science from California State University Los Angeles.


He's recently found himself to be the point of some controversy within the "punk community" for expressing politically conservative views, including an endorsement of the George W. Bush administration.


He resides in Virginia with his family. He works as the Op-ed editor of the Fredricksburg Free Lance-Star newspaper. He previously worked as the youth-editor for it! Magazine at the paper and won several awards for that section.
