He was born in South Africa and grew up in England, Egypt and the Channel Islands. In 1991 he moved with his two younger children, Christian and Louise, to Los Angeles where they could continue their careers in film and theater. There he soon became involved in animal rights and environmental issues. He served as a board member of The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund and supported the Ark Trust.
