David Bronconnier is a Canadian politician, currently serving as mayor of Calgary. Bronconnier served on Calgary's city council for several terms before narrowly winning the mayoralty race of 2001. Since then, his ratings have been mixed. Although he has generally been seen as an average mayor, his unusually venomous remarks about other council members and opposition figures have raised eyebrows. Bronconnier was re-elected in 2004 with nearly 80% of the votes, although he did not have significant competition. He is a member of the Liberal Party, although Canadian municipal politics does not work on a party system, as it does in some United States municipalities.
Bronconnier has studied Denver's use of tax-increment financing (TIF) -- a form of tax subsidy for redevelopment efforts -- in fostering development at the former Stapleton Airport site.
Bronconnier wants Calgary to use TIF to spur development of part of a vacant military base, which would make Calgary the first Canadian city to use such an economic-development tool.
Bronconnier described himself as "pretty impressed" by his visit to Denver and tour of Stapleton last month.
