Cox was considered one of the prominent figures of British watercolour painting and at the time was rivalled only by John Constable in his portrayal of nature's moods.
Cox was born in Deritend in Birmingham, the son of a blacksmith. He was apprenticed to a maker of fancy articles and soon learnt to paint portait miniatures. He was next employed as scene-painter in the theatre. It was then that he took up watercolour painting for which he became famous. Cox lived in Hereford and London between 1804 and 1840, returning to Birmingham to live in Harborne.
David was born in Yiyili (pronounced Yeerli), between Fitzroy and Halls Creek.
He is of the Gnoonyendi skin is twenty-two and married to a Kitja girl, Kathy Cox.
They have two little girls and David is now resident at Warmun, where he works in the Art Centre, stretching canvas and packaging, as well as painting.
