In 1995, Hooper began his music marketing company Kathode Ray Music while he was still he college, studying commercial music at the University of Memphis in Memphis, Tennesse. During the mid to late 1990's, he was hired by record and management companies to do street and radio promotion. He helped promote such bands as No Doubt, Bush, Blue Oyster Cult, Marcy Playground, Lightning Seeds, and Run-DMC. His marketing endeavors went on to involve Internet promotion. As well as promoting bands online, David created the first non-pornographic membership Web site: IndieBiz.com--a Web site devoted to helping musicians learn how to market themselves.


In 2001, he founded the Nashville New Music Conference (2NMC). The conference, which ran from 2001-2004, was the second most popular music conference of its kind. In 2005, the event name was officially changed to 2NMC as it evolved to a series of workshops and seminars (most of which take place in locations other than Nashville).


In 2006, his radio show Music Business Radio debuted. The show, a joint venture between David's company, Kathode Ray Music, and Tuned In Broadcasting, features interviews with top music industry professionals, including producers, record label executives, managers, and booking agents.
