A Scientific Analysis of Olympic Athlete Performances - Dr David Jenkins (554 words)
Remember that many Olympic competitors are professional athletes who are able to devote large periods of their lives to training and preparation.
Scientists use very specific fitness tests to monitor the progress of athletes and the effectiveness of training programs; eg blood is taken to measure lactate, hormones etc. Training programs are 'individualised' and tailored to each athlete depending on areas of relative weakness and strength.
Common to all athletes is the need to 'taper' their training and to 'peak' for competition.
Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week :: CMU's Drake (men's) and EMU's Jenkins (women's) receive weekly honors (870 words)
Jenkins won two individual events and ran on a winning relay team to help the EMU women's team win the team title at the Doug Raymond Invitational Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005, in Kent, Ohio.
Jenkins ran the third leg of the 4 x 400-meter relay team that needed to win the race to win the meet, Eastern Michigan won the relay in 3:45.87 to 3:46.69 for second-place Wichita State to give EMU the team championship, 104.75-103.5.
Jenkins won the 200-meter dash in :24.48 and also won the 60-meter dash in :07.62.
