Born in Massachusetts in 1937, Wyatt studied philosophy at Harvard University, where he received a bachelor's degree in 1959. He continued to study at the Boston University, where he got the MA in history in 1960. He finally graduated at Cornell University with a PhD in History in 1966. After one year teaching at the University of Michigan, he returned to Cornell in 1969, where he stayed until his retirement in 2002.
