Curb Records signed Kersh in 1996, and his debut album, Goodnight Sweetheart, was released the same year, with its title track peaking at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart. From then on, Kersh landed several more hit singles on the charts, and in 1998, a second album was released. Titled If I Never Stop Lovin' You, Kersh's second album featured the song "I Breathe In, I Breathe Out", which although never a single for Kersh himself, later became a No. 1 single for Chris Cagle in early 2002.
