LaChapelle attended the North Carolina School of the Arts and the School of Visual Arts in New York City. His first photograph was of his single mother, Helga LaChapelle, on a family vacation in Puerto Rico. She wore a bikini and held a martini glass on a balcony. Highly innovative photographer David LaChapelle was selected to create the official artwork for the 48th Annual GRAMMY Awards, it was announced today by The Recording Academy.
The Academy is proud to have an artist of David LaChapelle's caliber and passion involved in the 48th GRAMMY Awards," said Recording Academy President Neil Portnow.
LaChapelle trained as a fine artist at North Carolina School of the Arts before moving to New York City where he enrolled in both the Art Student League and the School of Visual Arts.
