David Leckie was educated at Newington College and is an Economics graduate of Macquarie University. Prior to his appointment by Kerry Stokes to Seven, he was associated with the Nine Network for 23 years. Having joined GTV-9 (Melbourne) as a sales executive, he was promoted to National Sales Manager, then Nine Network Sales Director in 1982 at TCN-9 (Sydney). In August 1990 he became Managing Director of the Nine Network and in 1994 was appointed Chief Executive Officer. In 2001 he was appointed a Trustee of the Centennial Park and Moore Park Trust. Leckie was very successful at building on the structure put in place by his predecessor at Nine, Sam Chisholm, who Leckie has been known to admit is one of the best - if not the best - in the television business.
The successful combination of Leckie as chief and Peter Meakin as head of the network's news and current affairs is "mostly reliant on mutual abuse", as Meakin puts it.
Leckie's wife Skye, described by one observer as a "social mountaineer" of a woman, was left to calm her husband.
