The Modest Adventures Of David O'Doherty
In May 2007, David's first TV series started airing on RTE Two. The premise of each episode was to have David attempt to achieve a goal which he set for himself. The show stars David, his neighbour Brian, and his friend Maeve Higgins. A running gag in the show is a reference to Stephen Roche. Episodes - Episode 1 featured David attempting to cycle from Dublin to Galway, for a gig later that night. He ended up having to quit at 100 kilometres away from his destination. Though on its own quite an achievement, he still considered it a failure.
- Episode 2 featured David attempting to have "a minor hit", preferably charting at #27. His song "Orange" instead reached #30, losing the #27 spot to Jibbs's "Chain Hang Low". He was unsure whether to bill this as a success, or a failure.
- Episode 3 featured David trying to make his rent. A number of strategies were employed for this end, such as: betting money on a game of golf he played with his nephew (and losing); betting money at a dog track (and losing); attempting to sell an office chair he found in a skip (and eventually making €1.30 on the sale); trying to find a job (though he turned down a tele-marketing placement); and eventually acting as an assistant to his neighbour Brian, whose work involved erecting signs about planning permission. He eventually made the €260 through the latter.
- Episode 4 featured him doing a stand-up tour. He got t-shirts printed for it. One gig was for children. He did a gig at Vicar Street (A 1200 seater venue),but due to it being cancelled and re-instated repeatedly it only had about 20 people show up. The t-shirts didn't arrive until after the tour had finished and were too small.
- Episode 5 featured David trying to make a short film. The film was about Why Ernest Shackleton went to the Antarctic. It heavily featured penguins. He had to sneak his crew into Dublin Zoo dressed in clothes from the 1800's. Due to too many people walking into frame,he found it then had to acquire a penguin somewhere else in Dublin. This proved to be a tough task. David ended up buying an inflatable penguin on eBay for 35 euro. It blew away in the wind. David subsequently had to dress up and play the part of the penguin. The film premiered in a local pub during the half time of a football match on the tv. The film's plotline went as follows:
- Shackleton's blocks are knocked over by bullies, one of whom has a picture of a penguin on his shirt.
- His girlfriend breaks up with him at the penguin enclosure at the zoo. The penguins seem to mock him.
- His parents choke on Penguin chocolate biscuits.
- He goes to the Antarctic.
- He shoots a penguin.
There was a rapturous applause when the match was put back on. This episode was dedicated to David's friend's pet kitten, Tony, who appeared in the episode and passed away in 2007. The film is now available on Youtube. - Episode 6, the final in the series, featured David's attempt to record a comedy CD. The trials and tribulations he encountered included an inability to move his Fender Rhodes piano, which resulted in having to record the CD in his one-room apartment. He then advertised the gig on A4-sized posters, asking to be contacted through email if anyone was interested in coming to the show. Upwards of 30 chairs were squeezed into the apartment, snack foods were purchased, and eventually David's friend Brian went to meet the interested parties dressed as a banana. The gig was a success, and the CD is now available to buy online from Trust Me I'm a Thief Records. [3]
