David Sanders was the Democratic candidate for U.S. Congress in Indiana's 4th District. He has ran agianst Steve Buyer in 2004 and in 2006, losing both times. An Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Purdue University, his expertise concerns gene therapy, cancer research, biodefense, and pandemic influenza. His research on the Ebola virus led to his participation in the United States Defense Threat Reduction Agency’s Biological Weapons Proliferation Prevention Program. He states his responsibilities included inspecting a formerly secret bioweapons laboratory in Siberia.
David Sanders has repeatedly run for political office against State Senator Alting in Lafayette and against US Congressman Steve Buyer and has been defeated in each race. Most recently, while running in 2006 for Congress he raised approximately $28,000--discounting the funds he loaned his campaign he raised the 3rd lowest amount of House challengers in Indiana. In 2004 and in 2006 Sanders loaned his campaign some funds and still has a debt from the 2004 failed race and again loaned his campaign funds but did not use all of it. He continues to show campaign debt in both races.
Dr. Sanders, his wife for 17 years, Miriam, and their three boys, all of whom attend the West Lafayette public schools, feel that it is the time to make sure that the 4th District of Indiana is well represented in the United States Congress.
Sanders is determined to ensure that high-quality health care is available to all-to the most vulnerable in our society, to our veterans, and to the elderly, who have contributed so much over their life spans and still have so much to contribute.
DavidSanders will also work to ensure that free trade agreements are not used as tools to take away workers' jobs and benefits or to erode safety and environmental protections.
