David Stoliar is the sole survivor of the 1942 ship the Struma, that was sailing from Romania to Palestine. The Struma's engines gave out during December, 1941 and a short time after was towed to Istanbul. The ship was towed and left in the middle of the Black Sea on Febuary 23. On Februray 24 there was a large explosion and the whole ship sank killing everyone on board except David Stoliar. Stoliar was found by a small boat sent out from a local watch-house. Stoliar was imprisoned in Turkey for 6 weeks, then released and admitted to Palestine. Later he moved to Japan and then the United States. As of the year 2000 Stoliar was 77 years old and living in Bend, Oregon. He was 19 when the Struma sunk.
