Watmaugh was born in London, England, and attended King's College London. He has worked as a reporter (the Cornish Guardian, a 'Talks Producer' (BBC Third Programme) and an editor (Ace Books). Previously, David Watmough was Senior Lecturer and Head of the Ultrasonics and Infra-red Laboratory in the Department of Biomedical Physics and Bio-Engineering of Aberdeen University, Principal Physicist to Grampian Health Board and, for 10 years, Chief Executive and a founding director of Aurora Instruments Limited.
David holds a BSc and PhD in Physics from St Andrews University, carried out Post Doctoral Research in Low-Temperature Physics at Oxford University, and is a Fellow of the Institute of Acoustics.
