2006 Congressional Campaign

The four-way race for the democratic nomination in the district was between Yassky, Yvette D. Clarke, Carl Andrews and Chris Owens, Major Owen's son. On August 30, 2006, The New York Times endorsed Yassky, citing his "stellar record on the Council" and criticizing his rivals for not making a substantial case for their election, and the Democratic leadership within Brooklyn for failing to find qualified black candidates for this seat. Numerous articles in the press mentioned the fact that Yassky had recently moved into the district just to run for the opening seat. Incumbent Congressman Major Owens, Councilmember Al Vann, and the Rev. Al Sharpton (the latter two not being residents of the district) called Councilmember Yassky a "colonizer" and asserted that "a white individual" shouldn't be allowed to hold the Congressional seat. On September 12, 2006 Yassky garnered 26% of the popular vote, amid light turnout. The final winner was Yvette D. Clarke greater than 31% of the vote([1]). Election 2001 - Brooklyn Councilman Wins His Seat With the Help of His High School Yearbook (1367 words)
Yassky's work as a Brooklyn Law School professor and former chief counsel to a crime subcommittee of the House Judiciary Committee may have helped him defeat the favored candidate, Steven Cohen, to secure his first seat in New York City government.
While Yassky supplied the shoe-leather by canvassing the streets of Williamsburg, Greenpoint, Park Slope and Brooklyn Heights to make his platform known, his campaign was funded in large part by well-connected, highly-educated peers who have traveled in the same social circles as Yassky since he was a child.
Many Yassky supporters in this election regarded him as a spokesman for their generation and social class, and were happy to have a candidate they could support--a sort of class president for his ever-widening circle of friends.
New York City District 33 (4307 words)
Brooklyn Law School assistant professor David Yassky speaks of the "desire to reclaim the waterfront and have some public space," while Elizabeth Daly, a longtime activist, notes that traffic from downtown Brooklyn is spilling over onto neighborhood streets.
City Council candidate David Yassky is the lead plaintiff in a law suit brought by the Brennan Center for Justice challenging a rule that would place restrictions on workers carrying petitions.
Yassky charges that the rule would be to give an unfair advantage to candidates such as Steve Cohn, a party insider who is also running in the 33rd District.
