Davis is a village located in Stephenson County, Illinois. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 662.


Geography

Davis is located at 42°25'16" North, 89°24'53" West (42.421216, -89.414683)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.1 km˛ (0.4 mi˛). 1.1 km˛ (0.4 mi˛) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 662 people, 254 households, and 180 families residing in the village. The population density is 594.4/km˛ (1,546.7/mi˛). There are 266 housing units at an average density of 238.8/km˛ (621.5/mi˛). The racial makeup of the village is 98.64% White, 0.30% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.15% from other races, and 0.76% from two or more races. 1.21% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 254 households out of which 37.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.2% are married couples living together, 7.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.1% are non-families. 26.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.61 and the average family size is 3.14.


In the village the population is spread out with 29.9% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 29.5% from 25 to 44, 20.8% from 45 to 64, and 12.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 98.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.1 males.


The median income for a household in the village is $45,385, and the median income for a family is $51,538. Males have a median income of $38,971 versus $22,250 for females. The per capita income for the village is $18,595. 7.1% of the population and 3.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.0% of those under the age of 18 and 9.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Davis, 95 Ill. 2d 1 (1983), in which the defendant argued that the indictment was insufficient to support a death sentence because it failed to allege a statutory aggravating factor.
Because Davis was tried, convicted and sentenced without the benefit of the new rules, his convictions and death sentence should be vacated, and the cause should be remanded to the circuit court for a new trial.
