Early life

Hughes was born in Launceston, Tasmania and was educated at Launceston High School and the University of Newcastle. he married Joan Johnson in 1940 and they had issue one son and two daughters. He was a school teacher in Tasmania from 1927 until 1935 and in the Armidale School from 1947 until 1950. He served in the Royal Australian Air Force from 1939 until 1945 as a squadron leader.[1] Launceston is a city in the north of the state of Tasmania, Australia, population approximately 103,000, located at the juncture of the North Esk, South Esk, and Tamar rivers. ... Political career

Hughes was elected as a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for Armidale from 1950 to 1973 for the Country Party. With the election of the Askin government in 1965, Hughes became Minister for Public Works,[1] with responsibility among other things for the completion of the Sydney Opera House. Hughes refused to accept Jørn Utzon's approach to managing the Opera House project and, specifically, to give permission for the construction of plywood prototypes for its interiors. This led Utzon to offer his resignation, which Hughes immediately accepted. The Opera House was subsequently completed according to designs that some argue are not consistent with Utzon's original vision. The Legislative Assembly, or lower house, is one of the two chambers of the parliament of New South Wales in Australia. ... The most remarkable thing about Hugh Davies is that he has managed to work in both the realms of academic, classical avant-garde music and street-level, avant-garde free improvisation.
Davies is also a regular collaborator with many of the best European improvisers, including guitarist Derek Bailey, the father of free improvised guitar music and a fellow who loves to make derogatory comments about composed music.
