Davit is a structure, usually made of steel, which launches lifeboats
held in the between the two davit arms over the side of the ship.
The development of the davit from it's original "goose neck form" to the current devices advanced greatly when A.P.Schat patented a number of systems in 1926 that allowed the lifeboat to glide over obstructions on a ships hull known as the "Schat Skate". This was followed by a self braking winch system that allowed the lifeboat to be lowered evenly and then the modern davit was invented.
Davits have always been designed to fit into deck spaces that the naval architects deemed necessary and a variety of designs emerged namely:
GRA - Gravity Roller track davit - usually above promenade decks. SPG - Single pivot garvity davit - for many different deck spaces.
The standard became so common that shipyard specifications call for Schat type davits from whatever source.
Davits can also refer to single mechanical arms with a winch for lowering life rafts and raising spare parts onto a vessel.
Boat Lifts by Davit Master has one of the widest dealer networks in the USA and world wide.
Davit Master manufactures many types of boat lift systems: Three styles of Cradle systems constructed from galvanized steel, aluminum, or a combination of both, in capacities ranging from 4,500 to 45,000 pounds.
Davit Master is guided today, as we have been since 1977 by our values of quality, innovation, integrity and excellence.
The davit is formed of a bent pipe having a nominal diameter of at least about two inches to about three inches.
The davit under the bent portion 34 is protected by a gusset plate 38 which is cut to match the contour of the curving pipe 34 and is welded in the curvature.
The davit is installed at the raised elevation shown in FIG.
