Dayton is a town located in York County, Maine. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,805.


Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 47.7 km˛ (18.4 mi˛). 46.3 km˛ (17.9 mi˛) of it is land and 1.3 km˛ (0.5 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 2.82% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,805 people, 638 households, and 509 families residing in the town. The population density is 39.0/km˛ (100.9/mi˛). There are 663 housing units at an average density of 14.3/km˛ (37.1/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 98.50% White, 0.00% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.22% from other races, and 0.83% from two or more races. 0.39% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 638 households out of which 44.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 69.6% are married couples living together, 6.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 20.1% are non-families. 14.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.83 and the average family size is 3.13.


In the town the population is spread out with 29.5% under the age of 18, 4.1% from 18 to 24, 37.1% from 25 to 44, 21.4% from 45 to 64, and 7.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 104.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.1 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $53,056, and the median income for a family is $57,692. Males have a median income of $38,150 versus $25,956 for females. The per capita income for the town is $20,629. 3.5% of the population and 2.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 4.5% of those under the age of 18 and 8.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

History of Dayton, Maine (487 words)
Dayton, in York County, has the Saco River for its eastern line, separating it from Buxton and Saco, on the east.
Railroad facilities are found on the north at the Hollis Station of the Portland and Rochester Railroad, and by the Boston and Maine, and Portland, Saco and Portsmouth Railroads, at Saco and Biddeford.
Dayton constituted a part of Hollis until 1854, when it was incorporated as a distinct municipal body.
