Dayton is a census-designated place located in Lyon County, Nevada. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 5,907.

Dayton is located at 39°15'6" North, 119°33'43" West (39.251707, -119.561943)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 82.2 km˛ (31.7 mi˛). 82.1 km˛ (31.7 mi˛) of it is land and 0.1 km˛ (0.04 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.06% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 5,907 people, 2,198 households, and 1,674 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 71.9/km˛ (186.3/mi˛). There are 2,322 housing units at an average density of 28.3/km˛ (73.2/mi˛). The racial makeup of the CDP is 91.42% White, 0.36% African American, 1.03% Native American, 1.03% Asian, 0.15% Pacific Islander, 3.84% from other races, and 2.17% from two or more races. 8.80% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 2,198 households out of which 37.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.6% are married couples living together, 9.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.8% are non-families. 18.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.69 and the average family size is 3.03.


In the CDP the population is spread out with 28.1% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 29.0% from 25 to 44, 25.0% from 45 to 64, and 11.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 102.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.2 males.


The median income for a household in the CDP is $43,599, and the median income for a family is $46,859. Males have a median income of $33,038 versus $26,140 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $18,417. 6.7% of the population and 5.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 8.2% of those under the age of 18 and 5.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

About the most important contribution to come from the town of Dayton was the idea from Adolph Sutro to transport ore and to drain water from the deeper shafts of the Comstock horizontally rather than to pump or haul it out vertically, which, in some cases, was nearly impossible.
Being on a highway, Dayton is not a true ghost town and has a number of its original buildings still standing.
This is one of the oldest constantly maintained cemeteries in the state of Nevada.
