Dayton is a city in the U.S. state of Minnesota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 4,699. Dayton is mainly in Hennepin County, but a part of the city extends into Wright County as well.


Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 65.2 km² (25.2 mi²). 60.7 km² (23.5 mi²) of it is land and 4.5 km² (1.7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 6.83% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,699 people, 1,550 households, and 1,292 families residing in the city. The population density is 77.4/km² (200.4/mi²). There are 1,566 housing units at an average density of 25.8/km² (66.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 95.28% White, 0.64% African American, 0.64% Native American, 0.81% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.87% from other races, and 0.77% from two or more races. 2.75% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 1,550 households out of which 45.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 71.9% are married couples living together, 7.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 16.6% are non-families. 11.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 2.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.03 and the average family size is 3.29.


In the city the population is spread out with 30.5% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 33.2% from 25 to 44, 23.7% from 45 to 64, and 4.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 103.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 105.1 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $66,875, and the median income for a family is $71,356. Males have a median income of $41,476 versus $30,386 for females. The per capita income for the city is $27,756. 2.7% of the population and 1.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.7% of those under the age of 18 and 0.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
