DeKalb County is a county located in the state of Missouri. As of 2000, the population is 11,597.


Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,103 km2 (426 mi2). 1,099 km2 (424 mi2) of it is land and 4 km2 (2 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 0.37% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 11,597 people, 3,528 households, and 2,473 families residing in the county. The population density is 11/km2 (27/mi2). There are 3,839 housing units at an average density of 3/km2 (9/mi2). The racial makeup of the county is 89.09% White, 8.86% Black or African American, 0.66% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.27% from other races, and 0.93% from two or more races. 1.08% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 3,528 households out of which 32.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.60% are married couples living together, 7.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.90% are non-families. 26.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 3.04.


In the county the population is spread out with 20.70% under the age of 18, 8.20% from 18 to 24, 36.30% from 25 to 44, 20.90% from 45 to 64, and 13.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 152.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 168.10 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $31,654, and the median income for a family is $37,329. Males have a median income of $28,434 versus $20,207 for females. The per capita income for the county is $12,687. 10.80% of the population and 7.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 10.80% of those under the age of 18 and 15.20% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

The county was organized in 1845 and is named after the American Revolutionary War general Johann de Kalb.
The county along with Buchanan and Andrew counties in Missouri and Doniphan County, Kansas is included in the St. Joseph Metropolitan Statistical Area, which has an estimated population of 122,934 in the year 2003.
