DeFord Bailey, a virtuoso harmonica player who won fame on the early Grand Ole Opry, has a more significant place in history as the first African American to win fame in the field of country music as well as blues.
Bailey was born in the community of Bellwood in Smith County on December 14, 1899.
DeFord Bailey died on July 2, 1982, and is buried in Nashville's Greenwood Cemetery.

Bailey was a professional musician from the age of 14, by which time he was already supporting himself around Smith County, TN, by playing the harmonica.
Bailey was given a chance and went on to become the Opry's first solo star as well as its first fl artist.
Bailey was forced to eat and sleep separately from his fellow Opry artists due to segregation.
