De Kalb is a city located in Bowie County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 1,769.

De Kalb is located at 33°30'29" North, 94°36'59" West (33.508016, -94.616264)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.4 km˛ (1.3 mi˛). 3.4 km˛ (1.3 mi˛) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,769 people, 725 households, and 477 families residing in the city. The population density is 521.4/km˛ (1,349.1/mi˛). There are 853 housing units at an average density of 251.4/km˛ (650.5/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 66.70% White, 30.81% African American, 0.57% Native American, 0.06% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.68% from other races, and 1.19% from two or more races. 2.43% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 725 households out of which 30.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% are married couples living together, 19.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.2% are non-families. 32.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 20.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.32 and the average family size is 2.92.


In the city the population is spread out with 25.7% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 21.0% from 25 to 44, 20.7% from 45 to 64, and 25.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 79.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 70.1 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $23,713, and the median income for a family is $32,212. Males have a median income of $27,955 versus $20,750 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,360. 28.3% of the population and 25.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 44.3% of those under the age of 18 and 25.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

DeKalb is on the Missouri Pacific Railroad and U.S. Highway 82 twelve miles northwest of New Boston in western Bowie County.
Because DeKalb was supposed to serve as an educational focal point for surrounding farmers, the owners of the land attempted to restrict settlement to those they considered acceptable.
When the Texas and Pacific Railway was built through the county in 1876, DeKalb became a station on the rail line and began to grow.
