DeLand, Florida 1876-1896: A tale of two families (2593 words)
No mention is made in local records of Miss Deans’ whereabouts after DeLand, but Helen DeLand, in her book, Story of DeLand and Lake Helen, refers to Rowena’s daughter, Marguerite, as a resident of Guilderford, an Albany, NY suburb, implying that Rowena and her husband had returned to New York State after leaving Florida.
DeLand attracted settlers from all over the east coast and the mid-west, the most common source of newcomers was upstate New York.
DeLand had spent most of his personal fortune on the towns start-up costs, the number of favorable responses to his real estate ads were on the rise, as were citrus harvests and tourism, giving him reason to believe that his long anticipated economic boom was about to erupt.
