The Dean Forest Railway is a 4.25 mile long heritage railway that runs between Lydney and Parkend in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire. The route was part of the Severn and Wye Railway. The society that operates the line started steam locomotive operations in 1971, and bought the trackbed and line from British Rail in 1985. Services were extended from Norchard to Lydney Lakeside in 1991, Lydney Junction in 1995/96, Tufts Junction in 2001, and to Whitecroft in 2003. HM Railway Inspectorate approval for the section to Parkend was granted in December 2005. Trains are operated by both steam and heritage diesel locomotives, and heritage diesel multiple units. Railways in Wales: Dean Forest Railway (1298 words)
With the DFR in the east and the Gwili at the westernmost limit, the two railways effectively put the South Wales railways in parentheses, providing a delightful start and finish for the enthusiast who may decide to 'take in' all the preserved railways in the area during a few days' holiday.
The DFR extended its operation as far as Tufts Junction during the 2001 season, which remains the terminus until the extension to Parkend is completed.
The railway is approached from the town of Lydney which is on the A48 between Gloucester and Newport.
Forest of Dean at AllExperts (501 words)
The (Royal) Forest of Dean is a region in the county of Gloucestershire, England.
The forest is steeped in history, and the area was settled by the Romans who used the natural resources of the area, including iron ore and charcoal.
Later, the forest was used exclusively as Royal hunting grounds by the Tudor Kings (see royal forest), but its rich deposits of iron ore led to it becoming a major source of iron at this time.
