Playing career

Not considered a player blessed with the highest degree of natural talent, Laidley was recruited from West Perth Football Club and was part of the West Coast Eagles' inaugural AFL squad in 1987. As an aggressive half-back line player and known as "The Junkyard Dog", Laidley was known for his commitment to the contest and to winning the ball. At the end of 1992 he was traded to North Melbourne after missing out on West Coast's 1992 premiership win. Laidley did eventually win a premiership, in 1996 with the Kangaroos. He retired at the end of the 1997 season.


Coaching career

After signing a new 2 year contract with the Kangaroos, it would appear that Laidley will be the Kangaroos last ever coach as they are extremely likely to fold in the next 2 years as Essendon will buy them out and in the deal will recieve Daniel Wells, Brent Harvey, Adam Simpson, Lindsay Thomas, Hamish McIntosh and Drew Petrie. In return the roos will recieve Matthew Knights and Jason Johnson.


Controversies

In 2007, former Kangaroos star Wayne Carey criticised Laidley, and has argued that another former team-mate John Longmire should replace him as coach. Laidley's contract is due for renewal at the end of 2007.[1] After a tough response by Laidley that referenced Carey's personal scandals, Carey responded by describing him as arrogant.[2] John Longmire (born December 31, 1970) played for Australian Rules Football for the Kangaroos Football Club of the Australian Football League. ...
