Death Valley Junction is a tiny Mojave Desert community in Inyo County, California, at the intersection of CA-190 and CA-127, just east of Death Valley National Park. The zip code is 92328, the elevation is 2041 ft., and the population less than 20. The community is located at NAD27 coordinates 36°18′08″N, 116°24′46″W. The U.S. Geological Survey lists a historic variant name of Amargosa for the community which is shown as the primary name on an official State of Nevada map from 1971. Death Valley Junction began life like most camps in the region: a tent town that appeared where there once were desert wastes only days before.
Death Valley Junction increased in size and prosperity around 1915 when new mines were found and the Death Valley Railroad was incorporated to build a line eastward to the site of New Ryan, on the very brink of Death Valley.
The Death Valley Railroad ceased operations shortly after the completion of mining at New Ryan, although the baby gauge railroad that ran from New Ryan into the extensive Widow Maker and Charley McCarthy Mines kept operating for the benefit of tourists until the late 1950's.

The town is named for the Amargosa River which flows through the valley from its origination in Nevada to its terminus in Death Valley, California.
The populated area of Amargosa Valley is sandwiched between U.S. 95 to the north, and the California border to the south.
Later, during the gold rush, miners crossed the valley in pursuit of routes to southern California and of the gold discovered in Death Valley in 1849.
