Deathlike Silence Productions was an Oslo, Norway based independent record label founded in the late 1980s that focused primarily on black metal. It was the first independent label to do so. The label was founded by Øystein Aarseth, also known as Euronymous, who operated the label until his murder in 1993. The name was derived from the Sodom song "Deathlike Silence" (from their 1986 release Obsessed by Cruelty). At first, the label only signed Norwegian acts, but Aarseth would go on to broaden the scope to other countries such as Sweden and Japan during its final years. Dispute with Burzum
Varg Vikernes had viewed Aarseth as somewhat incompetent since Aarseth had made a mistake on Burzum's self-titled debut: on the DSP release, the second song appears as "Ea, Lord of the Deeps" instead of "Ea, Lord of the Depths" as intended, though it should be noted that, during "Ea, Lord of the Depths", Vikernes screams "Ea Lord of the Deep" repeatedly. It is listed in the lyrics as the latter as well, which may explain why Euronymous chose to list the track as he did originally.
