The original release included five maps converted from Quake. The gameplay is similar to Quake deathmatch, with essentially the same weapons (except the one for mêlée combat, which is Half-Life's trademark crowbar instead of the original axe). DMC also imitates Quake's physics, which allows an advanced player to gain a lot of extra speed or jump very high by using a number of movement skills such as Bunny hopping and Rocket jumping. Gameplay

The default game speed in DMC is somewhat slower than in Quake. The weapons scale from the basic shotgun to the rocket launcher and the "shaft", a powerful directed energy weapon. Three kinds of bonuses are scattered over the maps, which give the player a temporary special power: "quad damage", "invulnerability", and the "ring of shadows" which turns the player into a ghostly, almost invisible figure. The DMC community

Not enjoying widespread popularity like the team-oriented Half-Life mods, Counter-Strike, Team Fortress Classic and Day of Defeat, DMC has found its fan base particularly among nostalgic deathmatch veterans. Further Quake maps were converted for DMC by fans, and original new maps designed. Further modifications were released for Deathmatch Classic, such as DMQ2 (Deathmatch Quaked), developed by the player Pix. These mods were designed for various reasons. The original Deathmatch Classic was not very user friendly for organising duels and team games, and did not offer any alternative game modes other than deathmatch. DMQ2 and other various modifications (one of the earliest being TrendKiller's DMC Pro) help players by including useful tools for organising matches, changing maps and voting through user friendly menus. These mods also altered the physics engine to further imitate true QuakeWorld gameplay. To a casual gamer, Deathmatch Classic feels very similar to Quake, with really only noticeable graphical differences between the games, but more passionate, hardcore players have found the differences. For example the grenade bounce has been altered and the jump physics behaviour changed. Game modes taken from QuakeWorld such as Arena, Midair and Rumble have been created. The gameplay in these modifications tend to be faster. Counter-Strike (CS) is a popular team-based mod of Valves first-person shooter (FPS) Half-Life. ... Team Fortress Classic (TFC or TF 1. ... DMC:Source

In October 2004, an independent mod developer announced that he was starting to work on DMC:Source, a conversion of Deathmatch Classic to the Source engine. Several people teamed up with him on this project, but it was eventually suspended. However, Valve released Half-Life Deathmatch: Source, which was released in July 2005. It is a straight port from Half-Life: Source with multiplayer abilities from DMC.
