Like her trampy late-century protégé, Mae was not out there to forward an agenda, or to break new moral ground; she was out there to forward MaeWest, and was brazen enough not to care much about bending some conventions to do so.
But what she did do was play the MAEWEST character on stage and off for nearly all of her life after the death of her manager, Timothy because that is what her fans demanded of her.
