Deborah Cherry, a Democrat from Burton, Michigan was elected to the State Senate in 2002. Prior to this, Deborah served in the Michigan House for six years, the maximum allowed under term limits. During her tenure she had six bills pass into law including tax relief for families paying for childcare, and prohibiting children from riding in the back of pick-up trucks. Deborah Cherry grew up in Montrose, Michigan. Graduating from Hill-McCloy High School as the Salutatorian in 1972, Deborah went on to Oakland University and received her Bachelor of Science degree in Human Resources Development with a concentration in Manpower. Following graduation, Deborah began working as a program coordinator for the Valley Area Agency on Aging (VAAA), where her responsibilities included monitoring programs to make sure they complied with federal guidelines, managing grants and helping to find funding for various services. Later in her career, Deborah served as Assistant Director for the Detroit Street Senior Citizens Center and as a Program Analyst for the Michigan Office of Services to the Aging. Montrose is a city located in Genesee County in the U.S. state of Michigan. ... Oakland University is a medium-sized public university located in Rochester, Michigan. ...


Deborah also grew to have an active interest in politics and public service. Her family was very active politically. In 1988, Deborah ran for office herself, winning an election to the Genesee County Commission representing the 3rd district. She served on the county board for six years and was elected chairperson for three of those years. At that time, she returned to school and received her master's degree from the University of Michigan - Flint in Public Administration. In 1994, Deborah won her election for the State House of Representatives. The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (UM or U of M) is a coeducational public research university in the U.S. state of Michigan. ...


Prior to returning to the Legislature, Deborah worked with the Flint Area Chamber of Commerce, providing consulting services on governmental issues, and with the University of Michigan - Flint as a grants writer.


Deborah is currently a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, serving as Minority Vice-Chair on the sub-committees for Community Health and Higher Education. She is also a member of the sub-committees on Capitol Outlay and Natural Resources.


Deborah serves on several boards, including the Greater Flint Health Coalition, the Genesee County Fair, the Michigan Fitness Foundation, the Michigan Prospect and the IMA Board, a group which provides educational and recreational opportunities for children.


Deborah is a member of St. Christopher's Episcopal Church.
