She is currently a columnist for the Independent and has contributed to many radio and television programmes.

She has has been critical of the practices of some Muslim traditions from a feminist perspective, claiming that British-Muslim women wearing veils (which she calls "masks") have been forced into a subordinate position.

Deborah came under fire after using the word "fuck" on BBC Breakfast in October 2005 during a discussion on bringing up children and swearing.
