Debut, released in July of 1993, is an album by Icelandic singer/songwriter/musician Björk. It was her first solo project after leaving The Sugarcubes, but far from her actual debut, which was released in 1977. The record was produced by Nellee Hooper and established Björk's audience outside of Iceland and cult followings in the UK, U.S. and elsewhere. Sonically, the album is a mix of dance beat-driven pop ("Violently Happy", "Big Time Sensuality", "There's More to Life Than This"), earthy, new age ("One Day", "The Anchor Song", "Aeroplane", "Human Behaviour"), and seductive rhythm based songs ("Venus as a Boy", "Come to Me"). björk:albums:DEBUT (2249 words)
Debut was the leap Björk made from being in numerous bands during her teens and early twenties, to her solo career.
But although this was far from her real debut as a singer and musician, having released her very first solo album at the age of 11, she set the title to Debut to signify a start of something brand new.
The matter of a proposed forthcoming album of remixes of Debut is causing some friction between the singer and her record company.
Debut Records (2992 words)
In the early Eighties the album was reissued as a 12-inch LP in an edition limited to 1,000 numbered copies by an anonymous collector, as were at least two other 10-inch Debut albums.
The title track (all of the album’s second side) was composed as a ballet score and it along with the four pieces on side one are performed by a miniature orchestra of six musicians, with Levister on piano.
The 12-inch Debut album is valued at $100 to $200, depending on condition; the Fantasy album tops out at $50 for the mono (red vinyl) edition in near-mint condition.
