Dee Dee has always been passionate about her family. She has resided in the Philadelphia area most of her life, and besides her success as an R&B powerhouse, she found time to use her gift of music at a church founded by her Grandfather, Eternal Baptist Church in Philadelphia. Coming from a strongly-religious family, Dee formed and taught several choirs; and she also formed a family gospel group with her cousins and sister-in-law, called the Gospelettes. Still today, her music ministry often has the church enthused and worshipping with excitement.

Sharp, born Dione LaRue in 1945, was reared in a North Philadelphia neighborhood where, she said, young girls were not encouraged to have aspirations beyond domestic work.
Sharp probably had no ideal that she would eventually become a rock 'n' roll star but, one day, fate intervened in the form of a help wanted ad in the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Sharp (unaccredited) accompanied labelmate Chubby Checker as the female singer on his duet-like 1962 record "Slow Twistin'." After hearing Sharp record "Slow Twistin" with Checker, the powers-that-be at Cameo-Parkway decided her vocals might fit the bill for a new song they had in the works.

Dee Dee began singing at church at a young age in her grandfather's choir.
Dee Dee Sharp wanted to settle into soul/r&b music, it wasn't that good for her and it didn't sell as well as her "dance music".
Dee Dee was great friends with a lot of the other female soul singers such as "Patti Labelle", "Mary Wilson", "Diana Ross", and many others.
