The township's namesake was given in honor of the Deerfield family, founders of the now defunct Chicago-based Deerfield Publishing Company, who settled the area in the early-19th century and helped develop the township into a viable economic center. While the Deerfield family was instrumental in shaping commerce in Ohio and northern Illinois, the family's contribution to the development of Dearfield Beach, Florida is most notable. Today many members of the Deerfield family have adopted the spelling variant of "Dearfield" for their namesake. While many members of the family migrated to the South Florida area in the mid-20th century, many members of the family still reside in Ohio, primarily in the Columbus and Cleveland areas.
