Deja Entendu is the second album from Long Island based band Brand New, released in 2003. Vastly different from their first release, Your Favorite Weapon, Deja Entendu was positively received by critics for the meaningful songs and lyrics. Deja Entendu is French for 'already heard' (much like the term 'déjà vu' meaning 'already seen') and is a commentary on modern rock. Two singles were released from the album: "The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows" and "Sic Transit Gloria...Glory Fades". The lyrics in this album are notably more mature than their previous record, portraying an enhanced feeling of fear, paranoia, and angst. Such examples include the rigors of endless touring ("I Will Play My Game Beneath the Spin Light"), Lacey's struggle with his grandfather's lung cancer ("Guernica"), and the emotional and psychological tolls of sex ("Sic Transit Gloria...Glory Fades" and "Me vs. Maradona vs. Elvis"). Also notable is the concept of a dual storyline that exists in "Good to Know That if I Ever Need Attention All I Have to Do Is Die", where one story line reflects a writer's life and the other is the story he writes. The entire album was leaked, mostly unmixed, several months before release without song titles, and including the 12th track "Flying at Tree Level v1.0". Although most tracks are identical to the final release, the track "Sic Transit Gloria...Gloria Fades" has organ present in the verse lines which the final version doesn't.

SOUNDTHESIRENS.COM - Review :: Brand New - Deja Entendu (466 words)
Rather than partake in the creative stagnation and general apathy that is common of young bands, Brand New took the ambitious and uncommon route on their sophomore album Deja Entendu, one in which they would grow both musically and lyrically.
The tone of Deja Entendu is set in the solemn opener "Tautou," which fades into "Sic Transit Gloria...Glory Fades," a stellar track with bass driven verses and a thundering chorus made complete with emocore screams.
Deja Entendu, which means "heard it before" in French, is ironically one of the least derivative rock albums released in recent years.
