Deku Baba

Deku Babas are a fictional species of enemy that appears in the Legend of Zelda series. They are carnivorous plants, with a venus fly trap-like mouth, and sprout from the ground whenever their roots detect any potential prey. They are known to lash out at an enemy with no provocation (possibly for food, like a Venus fly trap). Sometimes, their stems can be used to fashion Deku Sticks. They also sometimes contain Deku Seeds that are dropped when they die. Image File history File links Majora_deku_baba. ... Image File history File links Majora_deku_baba. ... Your Grandma. ... In Ocarina of Time, when Kokiri Forest, the breeding ground of this species, was cursed by the great evil, Ganondorf, larger species terrorized the village where the Kokiri lived. The legendary hero, Link, was able to remove this curse after destroying Phantom Ganon, an evil being orchestrated by Ganondorf, in the Forest Temple. In effect, all Deku Babas were immediately annihilated from the village. In this game, if destroyed normally, they would drop Deku nuts. However, if they were slain when stunned by a Deku nut, boomerang or sword attack, they would yield a Deku stick. In Majora's Mask, there are a few variations of the Deku Baba. Most of these resemble those seen in Ocarina of Time. The first is similar to the Ocarina of Time version, except it doesn't have a stem, only the piranha-like head popping out of the ground. These are located in the swamp region and have no attacks unless you walk into them; they are vulnerable to almost all forms of attack and drop Deku Nuts when defeated. Two other versions are duplicates of those in Ocarina of Time, they have stems and heads, some lunge forward to attack while others stand straight up and wiggle around a little. Both of these versions are located throughout the game and drop Deku Sticks if killed while upright, but the lunging kind also produce Deku Nuts if they are killed while not upright. The final and most annoying variation are the Bio Deku Baba. These vicious plants are located in the Great Bay and Stone Tower Temples, and can only be taken out by one hit with a Powder Keg. Anything else will sever the stem, allowing the plant to walk freely around its environment. On land this can be very irritating and difficult to time with any form of attack, although the sword works best, while underwater Mikau's barrier attack is the best option.

In The Wind Waker, the Deku Babas evolved into larger and more vicious forms called Boko Babas. At a distance, they resemble Baba Buds, but if Link comes closer the head emerges and attempts to eat him. They are destroyed by stunning them with a jump-attack and then cutting the stem, which forms a Boko stick. After obtaining the Boomerang, if you fire it at a Boko Baba it will die instantly. They can also be killed by several shots with the Hero's Sword. They appear in the Forest Haven and Forbidden Woods, enforcing the theory that they used to be the Kokiri Forest area. They usually drop their seeds after they are defeated. In the Forest Haven, there is a Korok who can make a Blue Potion (which restores all health and magic) with four of them if Link is carrying an empty bottle. There are several types of Deku Babas found in Twilight Princess. Aside from the normal kind, there are red Deku Babas (called Baba Serpents), which will chase you after its root has been cut, if Link is too far away from the bouncing head, it will reattach to it's base. There is a very large version whose base must be blown up with a bomb after the stalk is cut. The normal Deku Baba has a Twilight counterpart. The boss of the Forest Temple, Diababa, is two giant Deku Babas who reside in a pool of acid. The second stage of the boss is a third Deku Baba that has one single eye inside its mouth and can spit acid. Both stages of the boss are defeated by using the Gale Boomerang to bring bombs to the Baba's mouth.
