The area has extensive suburban sprawl. King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, and Cherry Hill, New Jersey, are two of the largest suburban edge cities. Philadelphia's suburbs contain a high concentration of malls, including the King of Prussia Mall, the largest on the East Coast, and the Cherry Hill Mall in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, the first enclosed mall on the East Coast. Ocean county is both not close to New York City or Philadelphia in terms of miles. There really is no part of the county that is less than hour and ten minutes from either city. Similarly to how much of Mercer county's population is in more influenced by Philadelphia because the southern part of the county is more densely populated, much more of Ocean county is populated in the northern part of the county. The northern part of the county is much closer to New York City than it is Philadelphia. Public transportation accomodations are much greater to New York City than they are to Philadelphia too.
There are exceptions of Ocean county that are recognized as apart of the Delaware Valley Region's influence. Such places include New Egypt and Jackson which are located in the north-western part of the county. Places such as Mystic Island, New Jersey also should be recognized more as apart of the Philadelphia area because of their close location to New Gretna, which is apart of Burlington county.
Unlike many other counties in New Jersey that have experienced more immigration and have always had larger populations, Ocean and Monmouth county didn't entirely populate themselves as opposed to more natural counties such as Mercer, Middlesex or Burlington actually did. Being that the United States had approximately 151 million people in 1950, the United States has doubled in population over the past 58 years. If you were to properly accumulate natural increase, along with using the normal Latin American, Asian, Middle Eastern, West Indian and Eastern European immigration patterns over this period, you could relate that one's population should have doubled.
Although the dependability of acquiring statistics for those of Latin American descent is often compromised with the questionability of the 1970 government implemented term Hispanic, there has been low Asian immigration compared to the average of the United States, although more West Indian and equal Middle Eastern, sub-saharan African and Eastern European immigration. Being that Ocean county should had about 56,622 people in 1950, this should have indicated that there would be a little over 113,000 residents in Ocean county today. However, there are more than 562,000 people living in the county today, showing that there was migration from other areas that significantly contributed to this population. Although it was much less than Ocean counties outside growth, the county north which is Monmouth county and is also along the eastern part of New Jersey has had growth contributed from more densely populated counties in Northern (i.e. Hudson and Essex counties) and Central (i.e. Middlsex and Mercer counties).
Most of the population approximate 450,000 of surplus growth was from mostly from the state of New Jersey, and occasionally (although statistically insigificant) New York and Pennsylvania. Much of the counties in Northern New Jersey, as well as southwestern New Jersey were over-populated and didn't have much room to grow. There was also high immigration in counties like Camden in southwest and Hudson in North. For example, Camden county had a little over 300 thousand people in 1950 and has about 511,000 now. Technically speaking, they should have at least 89 thousand more due to natural increase and probably even more considering the accelerated immigration. Similarly, Mercer had 229,781 in 1950 and has only 367,605 now. Many migrated east to Monmouth county or southeast to Ocean where it was more open, new and more affordable homes were being built in the late 40's, 50's and 60's.
Burlington, Gloucester and Atlantic (southeast NJ) and other south Jersey counties had similar missing population growth, because many migrated to Ocean county. Similarly, North Jersey did the same exact thing. Most of the pre-WWII descended Ocean county population was in the northern part of their county, so outside influence was least there. More from places in north Jersey were more intrigued to go there because it was closer to them and in commuting distance of Manhattan.
More from southwest and Atlantic county in New Jersey took interest into moving into the southern part of the county, where it was closer to them and cheaper. However, central Ocean county is shared by both the descendants of migrators from places closer to NY and Philadelphia, resulting in why there is a mixed identity of both the NY and Philadelphia areas.
This is also influential in the interests of those who access the Six Flags in Jackson, the Jersey shore, Wildwood, Atlantic City and Cape May during the summer. Both people from the New York and Philadelphia areas utilize these vacation destinations.
Mercer County, New Jersey, although many aren't completely sure, is a Philadelphia suburb and mostly located off the Delaware River. Mercer county is often conjoined with the southwest New Jersey and Bucks county image, in which they border both. Much of the confusion to this is due to the fact that Central Jersey is not technically recognized as a region of the state, but rather a socially understood one. Unlike northern and southern New Jersey which you could more clearly cut in half, central New Jersey is more in the gray territory in terms of which side of the state and major city metropolitan area they relate to. Mercer county is generally apart of the southern half of central New Jersey, but although the northern part of the county is very much on the western half of the state, it's actually smack in the middle of North and south. Because of their location on the Delaware river, Mercer county is apart of the NJ-PA-DE tri-state area and not the NY-NJ-CT tri-state area.
Much of the reason why so much of Mercer county's culture is linked more to Philadelphia is that they share a similarity in having many of their descendants immigrate off the Delaware river and that much of their population is in Trenton and Ewing. For example, the Dunkin Donuts contract during the NFL season which co-sponsors with the Philadelphia Eagles includes all of Mercer county, but no other Northern or central New Jersey counties. A popular trademark of Philadelphia culture is commonly used in Mercer county are Cheesesteaks and Hoagies, as there are some who say the common American term Subs, few use and sometimes are even unaware of what New York's trademark Heroes are.
In 2000, multiple sources have actually attempted to re-distribute what is apart of the New York Metropolitan area which detail Trenton as being apart of that area. However, Philadelphia also claims Trenton to be apart of there's, because Trenton is less than 20 minutes away as opposed to approximately 75 minutes from Manhattan. Many businesses have not accomodated such terminology though and many of the residents of Mercer county are unaware of this technical change.
Although there are some ties in places such as Heightstown and East Windsor town which is approximately one hour from both, all parts of Mercer county are geographically closer to Philadelphia. Most towns in Mercer county do not have New York news on basic television (Princeton, Heightstown are exceptions to this who have both). All towns in Mercer county and some towns such as Allentown, New Jersey (which is apart of a less populated part of Monmouth county) also only receive programmed channels under many cable networks that will not provide New York/North Jersey stations such as Yes for the Nets and Yankees, because they are Philadelphia suburbs. Unlike much of Atlantic county which mostly receives south Jersey/Atlantic City radio stations, Mercer county is actually geographically further from Philadelphia, even though radio stations in northern Mercer county are completely clear. Much of the reason why Philadelphia aims into putting more energy into this is because of Mercer county and New Jersey counties are generally more wealthy than Pennsylvania and Delaware. New York radio stations are generally fuzzy in Mercer county.
As ironic as it may seem because of how large the New York area can seem sometimes, towns that actually border Mercer county generally receive more accomadations to Philadelphia than visa versa in everything except public transportation. In fact, all towns that touch Mercer county could be considered Philadelphia suburban/New York exburb because of geographical distance. Places like Flemington, New Jersey are apart of this. Many real-estate web-sites actually claim towns such as Cranbury and Jamesburg to be apart of the Philadelphia suburbs due to the fact that that they are closer in terms of miles, although are equal too considering traffic. Mercer county is generally an exburb (extended suburb) of New York, similarly to how Middlesex and Monmouth counties are exburbs to Philadelphia.
The Delaware river is the key factor as to the geographical relativity that Mercer county shares with places directly south. This could seem awkward to those who don't know, because Mercer county may very well be the most expensive Philadelphia suburban county. Mercer county has very favorable geography and accessibility to the New Jersey Turnpike which is a contributing factor to the expense level and economic accessibile options their residents have.
