The 6,700-tonne guided-missile destroyer INS Delhi is India's first "Stealth Warship". Described as a the Navy's version of the Russian Kashin Class destroyer, the Delhi was the first Principal Surface Combatant to join the Indian Navy. The destroyer is fitted with sophisticated anti-ship, anti-aircraft and anti-submarine sensor and weapon system.

With its heavy weapon load and multiple anti-ship, submarine and surface warfare roles, the missile packed ship is touted as the most powerful warships in Asia after the 9,500-tonne Japanese class Aegis destroyer. INS Delhi is the first Indian warship to be fitted with air and surface search radar.

Taking media on an onboard tour yesterday, Captain Chandra Shekhar Azad said the Delhi Destroyer is being designed, developed and built indigenously with the support of Russia, Ukraine, Britain and France.

The 100 mm main gun at the bow of the ship is supplied by Russia. The vessel is equipped with four quad launchers. The surface-to-air missile system is the Russian Shtil. The missile's maximum range is 25 km. The ship has a surveillance capacity of over 350 km and can sterilise an area of 250 km, captain Azad said. The ship has a quadruple torpedo launcher capable of hitting the target ranging from 50 km to 120 km. It is also equipped with two anti-submarine rocket launchers with 12 tubes. Their range is 6 km and the maximum engagement depth is 500m. The Sea King can also carry two choppers, primarily equipped for the air surveillance role. The choppers, equipped with super searcher radars, are capable of flying four and half hours non-stop. They are capable of both anti-submarine as well as anti-surface operations and can take off from the vessel within five to ten minutes, he added. All the three vessels have a total thousand crew. INS Delhi alone has a crew of about 30 officers and 350 sailors.

Britain.tv Wikipedia - Destroyer (4159 words)
Modern destroyers are equivalent in tonnage but drastically superior in firepower to cruisers of the World War II era, capable of carrying nuclear missiles able to destroy cities in a very small volley.
Destroyers were involved in the skirmishes that prompted the Battle of Heligoland Bight, and filled a range of roles in the Battle of Gallipoli, acting as troops transports and fire support vessels, as well as their fleet-screening role.
The destroyers (as well as frigates) are, as always, the workhorses of the fleet, the former optimised for air defence and the latter for surface and subsurface warfare.
A Comparison of Delhi & Sovremenny Destroyers (2085 words)
The Delhi Class is best described as a multi-role ship of Indian, Russian and Western origin with a significant ASW capability while the Sovremenny Class is intended primarily for the anti-ship role.
The Delhi is very similar to the Sovrenemmy-II in its displacement and dimensions; 6900 tons full load, 163 meters in length, 17 meters in beam and 6.5 meters in draught vs. 7800 tons full load, 156 meters in length, 17.3 meters in beam, and a draught of 6.5 meters.
On the Delhi, the CIWS is paired amidships in an arrangement that is identical to the Kashin's while on the Sovremenny, the CIWS mounts are located by the bridge and also amidships.
