The region was explored in 1823 by Captain Roland, who was searching for farm land. The land was granted to new settlers, and the town is now a major agricultural centre, with a large number of farms of all types in the area.
The town was bypassed by the new Bass Highway in the early 1990s. However the town has not suffered from this, and is a popular rest location for travellers. It also serves as a base to explore areas such as Cradle Mountain, the Great Western Tiers, Mole Creek and the Central Highlands.
Deloraine is a charming, historically interesting and attractive town located on the banks of the Meander River 228 km north of Hobart, 48 km west of Launceston and 253 m above sea level.
To the south of the river is the original village of Alveston which was in existence before the larger settlement of Deloraine began to develop on the northern bank of the river.
The Tasmania Pottery, on the road to Chudleigh, is no longer operating as a tourist attraction but it is still possible to see its outstanding external feature - the largest coffee pot in Australia.
We are situated in the beautiful historic town of Deloraine, midway between Devonport and Launceston.
Surrounded by lush farmlands, Deloraine is set under the backdrop of the Great Western Tiers, a majestic escarpment which leads up to Tasmania`scentral highlands plateau.
Deloraine has established itself as one of Australia`s foremost art and craft centres.
