FACTOID # 23: In Australia, there's plenty of open road. Which is just as well, because you wouldn't want to park your car.

"Beautifully Engineered"

Delta's single-handle (hot and cold controlled by the same knob) ball-type controls are arguably the epitome of engineering elegance, to the point of the company's slogan, "Beautifully Engineered". They also compete favorably with Moen and American Standard faucets as a trio of manufacturers extremely well-regarded in the plumbing field, and all have lifetime warranties (the plumbing saying "The only reason to replace a Moen is because you're sick of the finish" applies equally well for Delta and American Standard), though they use completely different mechanisms and internal components to achieve the same basic result (temperature and volume control of the flow) - so selection between the three should be exclusively a matter of personal choice mostly revolving around both the available styles and functional behavior. Moen is the name of the following places: An anglisised spelling of Møn. ... American Standard is a leading United States manufacturer of bathroom equiptment. ...

Almost all Delta single-handle faucets, with the exception of newer temperature-compensating bathtub/shower controls, use an elegantly simple ball mechanism.

As the handle is pushed away from the user (or up, with a tub/shower control), holes in a stainless steel (or plastic, with similar design imitators) ball align with holes machined into the faucet's base, allowing water to pass. As the ball is tilted toward the left (as with North American convention of the hot control on the left and cold on the right), better alignment with the left ports allow more hot water; conversely, leaning the ball towards the right allows more cold water. A variant (used primarily on Delta's Peerless brand) requires twisting the knob toward the desired temperature rather than leaning, the mechanical changes required in this mechanism are simple and subtle - for lifetime warranty replacement parts, always take all original pieces to a Delta retailer to ensure proper replacements.

As with all mechanical devices, a faucet will eventually fail.

Should a Delta single handle faucet begin to leak, shut off the water supply (and the water heater, if it will be affected - if gas, follow the manufacturer's lighting instructions after the job is done). Remove the handle.

  • If the faucet is a ball-type, you will see a round hemispherically-shaped chrome piece. Handle leaks are caused by a worn shoe, the Teflon-coated plastic piece which holds the ball in position. A drip from the spout is caused by worn seats, which are responsible for the seal between the water supply ports and the ball.
    • Turn the top hemispherical nut (retainer) counter-clockwise to remove it. Wrap it with electrical tape to prevent cosmetic damage if you need to use a pipe wrench or Vise Grips. Some versions require a custom wrench which engages in a pair of slots on the top of this piece; the wrench was provided in the box with the faucet and should have been attached to a shut-off valve so it would be found when next required.
    • Remove the shoe retainer, then the shoe (a white plastic disk typically with a Teflon surface), then the stainless steel ball (imitators may be plastic and may frequently be upgraded by purchasing real Delta parts - note that knock-off faucets are not made by Delta and are not covered by Delta's warranty - caveat emptor.). Take notes as to the location of the orientation notch on the ball's stem.
    • Using a pair of tweezers or fine needle-nose pliers, remove the two rubber seats inside the ball cavity. Remove also the springs. Be careful not to damage the machined cavity. Note that the cylindrical seats have faces and skirts; the skirts ride over the top of the narrow side of the seat springs while the faces contact the ball.
    • Take the shoe, the ball, the seats and the springs to any local Delta retailer. The retailer should provide you with seats, springs and a shoe, all free of charge. Replacement of the ball is usually unnecessary, but if the ball is in poor shape (broken stem or gouging caused by seats worn to the point where the springs scuffed the surface, both are quite rare) insist on a replacement. Polished surfaces are normal on a well-used Delta ball and will probably lengthen the lifespan of other parts, but grooves and channels which can be felt with a finger are grounds for replacement.
    • Reassembly is opposite of disassembly. All parts should be lubricated with silicone plumber's grease (not included amongst the warranty parts). The skirts of the seats go into the ports drilled in the ball's cavity, leaving the "bigger face" end of the cylinder facing the ball; when the faucet is off, water pressure will force the skirts more tightly against their ports and the faces against the ball - in short, the greater the water pressure, the tighter the faucet is sealed.
    • Seats, springs, shoes and balls should all be free, as required, and at the discretion of an experienced member of the retailer's plumbing department. In most cases, they will give you two seats, two springs, one shoe, and check your ball. As stated before, the ball seldom requires replacement and unless it's not functional (grooves or broken stem), you probably don't want to replace it anyway.

For Delta's double-handle (separate hot and cold knobs) washerless faucets, the same seats and springs are used, though they operate on the stainless steel faces of plastic cartridges. Take all parts (hot and cold, you should replace them as a set) with you to your local Delta retailer; if it's a washerless faucet, you should be provided with free replacement parts. Teflon is polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), a polymer of fluorinated ethylene. ... It has been suggested that caveat venditor be merged into this article or section. ... Silicones, or polysiloxanes, are inorganic polymers consisting of a silicon-oxygen backbone (...-Si-O-Si-O-Si-O-...) with side groups attached to the silicon atoms. ... Look up grease in Wiktionary, the free dictionary. ...

Delta single-handle bathtub/shower controls use a pressure balancing cartridge similar to Moen's concept; replacement procedures are the same though the cartridge will be drastically different - consult Delta's website for removal and replacement instructions. Moen is the name of the following places: An anglisised spelling of Møn. ...
